History of the Faculty

The necessity to have stomatological specialists in the Republic of Moldova was the basis of founding the Faculty of Stomatology in 1959. Until then, stomatological specialists, 20-30 annually, were prepared in the respective establishment from Russia and Ukraine.

During the period of foundation of the faculty within the faculty of pediatrics Dr. Gh. Moscovco was appointed the vice-dean of the faculty. Later, Dr. V. Marin and Dr. A. Babin were appointed in the same quality.

In 1961 stomatological departments: therapeutic, surgical and orthopedic stomatology, were set up within the faculty. Foundation of profiling departments and increase of the number of students at the faculty was the base for setting up the dean’s office; Dr. Matcovschi was the first dean of the faculty.

In 1965 Prof. Gutan, specialist in surgical stomatology, becomes the dean of the faculty. In 1971 prof. I. Postolache, specialist in orthopaedic stomatology, becomes in his turn the dean. In 1982 Gh. Nicolau, Professor, specialist in therapeutical stomatology, become the dean. The vice-dean is I. Santevoi, PhD in chemistry.

Within the period between 1986-1993 S. Sirbu, PhD in Medicine, was the dean of the faculty. In relation with the growing number of students the position of vice-dean was introduced. E. Chiriac, PhD in Medicine was elected the vice dean. In 1993 Professor I. Postolache is elected the dean and Prof. V. Ouatu is the vice dean.
In 2001 Professor Godoroja, specialist in pediatric stomatology, chief of the respective department, is appointed as the dean. Dr. S. Ciobanu becomes the vice dean.

During different periods, beside the profiling departments (therapy, surgery, orthopaedics), the faculty hosted the departments of general surgery, otorhinolaryngology, history, Latin, foreign languages, radio diagnosis, radiotherapy.
The necessity to study more deeply pediatric stomatology leads to the foundation of the respective department by Prof. Godoroja – the fourth profiling department, in 1986.
Matriculation of the students in the 1st year varied from 50 to 175 persons in different years. In 1989 students from Syria, Jordan, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey and Israel start their training at the faculty.

Since the very foundation of the faculty, the dean’s office and departments have done and do methodical work directed to constantly improve the academic process: curricula, syllabi and methodical works and texts of lectures are analysed and approved. A lot of work is done in respect of creation and elaboration of new didactic materials: tables, schemes, samples, slides, original videos, CDs, clinical cases, questions, tests for self-control, control papers, examination works. All these activities and, in addition, equipping the departments with modern materials, optic and video, multimedia, equipment influence positively the organization and improvement of the academic process.
At the same time, the departments approve of the plans for the curative, clinic and scientific activity. New methods of diagnosis and treatment as well as prevention are being initiated and used in the respective clinics and different curative-preventive establishments of the Republic of Moldova and abroad.

Scientific activity includes presentation of scientific reports, publication of articles and theses for different scientific degrees. The academic staff of the faculty takes part in different scientific forums of the national and international levels in Russia, Romania, Bulgaria, Germany, France, Holland, USA, etc. Within the stomatological department were held three theses for the degree of Full Professor, 32 for the PhD degree in Medicine. The academics of the faculty published 15 monographies, over 2500 articles in diverse papers and collection of works. The scientific work was awarded by 24 innovation patents and 425 proposal and rationalization patents. At present, 6 works for full professor and 23 for the PhD degree are being worked on.
The centre of the attention of the dean’s office and the academic staff is the educational and professional process of training the students. The academic staff of the faculty accomplish their tasks working individually and continuously with the students from the 1st year to the graduation.

From 1991 after the reorganization of the Medical Institute in Medical University, the curricula are reconsidered and the numbers of specialty hours are doubled, thus meeting the requirements of the European countries. The departments of the faculty approve new curricula which are approved by the Methodical Committee, Scientific Council of the Faculty and Central Methodical Council of the University, and the profiling disciplines are taught from the very first year of studies. Throughout its existence the faculty prepared 3000 specialists who work not only in Moldova but also in other countries (Russia, Ukraine, Romania, Israel, USA, Germany, Jordan, Syria, Sudan, etc.) Many of the graduates of the faculty became scientists, chiefs of district hospitals, chiefs of polyclinics, stomatological departments, high level doctors, laureates of different prizes.
At present, the faculty continues its work on improving the academic, curative, educational and scientific process and maintains collaborative relations with respective faculties from universities of USA, France, the Czech Republic, Russia (Mosocw, Cazan, Sankt-Petersbourg), Ukraine (Lvov, Kiev), Romania (Iasi, Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca), Byelorussia (Minsk), etc. Having a modern clinical base – Stomatological Clinic of the University and other clinics, dean’s office, profiling departments and the whole academic staff continue to prepare highly skills specialists in accord with the international requirements.
In 2001 the Faculty was evaluated by the European Committee DentEd Evolves and accredited by the national Council of Academic Evaluation and Accreditation of Educational Establishments of the Republic of Moldova.
