The Faculty of General Medicine was the first faculty of the State Medical Institute of Chisinau, which started its activity in 1945.
During the first 9 years of its existence only futures generalists were trained. In 1954 paediatric specialists started to be trained, and in 1963 was initiated training of epidemiologists.

At present, the Faculty of General Medicine includes 36 departments and 463 academic staff, including 61 full professors, 267 PhDs in Medicine; 9 professors are academicians or corresponding members of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova or other academies; 20 professors were awarded the title of Distinguished Person. At the numerous departments of the Faculty: Human Anatomy, Pharmacology, Neurology, Gynaecology, Surgery 1 and 2, Traumatology and Orthopaedics, Biochemistry, Physiopathology, Morphopathology, Microbiology were created new scientific directions and the results obtained by the staff of the departments of Neurology, Morphopathology, Surgery, Traumatology and Orthopaedics, Physiopathology were awarded State Prizes of the Republic of Moldova. Inventions of professors V. Prisacaru, V. Ghicavii, P. Galetchi were appreciated with Golden Medals at international exhibitions.
During the 58 years of its activity the academic staff of the faculty held 830 theses for the titles of full professors (200) and PhDs in Medicine (630), 350 monographies and manuals were published as well as 20000 articles. The scientific activity of the academic staff of the faculty is indispensable in the academic process. At present, the faculty has 2300 students, including 400 foreign students (Syria, Jordan, Israel, Romania, Ukraine, Russia, Bulgaria, etc.). Studies are done in 4 languages: Romanian, Russian, English and French.
The majority of the 20000 graduates of the faculty follow doctors’ obligations in all the spheres of the health care system of the country, others perform successfully their activities in Romania, Russia, Ukraine, Byelorussia, Jordan, Palestine, Israel, Canada, USA, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Syria, Yemen, Sudan, etc. professional training at the level of modern requirements allowed many of our graduates to become outstanding organizators and managers of the health system, chiefs of regional, urban, rural and municipal hospitals, Ministers of Health: Nicolae Testemitanu, Ion Soroceanu, Chirila Draganiuc, Timofei Mosneaga, Gheorghe Ghidirim, Eugen Gladun, Mihai Magdei, Andrei Gherman, rectors of Alma Mater: Nicolae Testemitanu, Vasile Anestiadi, Leonid Cobaleanschi, Ion Ababii, directors of research institutes in the field of prevention and prophylaxis: Mihai Popovici, Mircea Sofroni, Cheorghe Tambalaru.

Training of students is fulfilled at the departments and laboratories having modern equipment, and republican and municipal clinics and hospitals, research centres with 10000 beds serve as a clinical base. Practical internships after the 3rd, 4th and 5th year of studies are done in all the republican and municipal hospitals from the Republic of Moldova.
The curricula and syllabi for training are adjusted to those existing in Western Europe (France, Holland, Italy, Germany, Romania), this allowing to exchange students for internships and further studies.

The academic staff of the Faculty hold continuously improvement training periods in medical universities from Romania (Iasi, Cluj, Bucharest, Targul Mures), France (Nantes, Grenoble, Paris), Russia (Moscow, Sanct-Petersbourg), Ukraine (Harkov, Kiev, Cernauti), Belgium, England, Germany. Strong scientific relations exist between the faculty and scientists from Bucharest, Cluj, Iasi, Nantes, Renes, Moscow, Sanct-Petersbourg, Kiev, etc.
The students of the faculty have the possibility of deepening their knowledge in scientific societies within each department, exposing the results obtained at the yearly university conference, republican and international conferences.
Throughout the period of studies the students use the services of the library for free. The library has over 700000 volumes in different languages, 3 computer rooms, Anatomic Museum with 3000 exposed materials and the total surface of 400 m2, well-equipped hostels and a sports complex.
